The government said in the statement that 40 organizations have been awarded nearly 7 million NOK in grants in connection with the upcoming general and Sami Parliament elections in the autumn of 2013. The aim of the grant scheme is to increase awareness of the elections and increase voter turnout.
- I am pleased that the interest in the [grant] scheme has been so great, and I hope these measures will contribute to more people casting their vote in the autumn election, says Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Liv Signe Navarsete.
The Ministry has prioritized measures that target youth, immigrants and voters who need special organized information. Interest in the scheme has been great, and the ministry received the 120 applications in total have applied for almost 29 million.
The measures that are applied vary greatly in content. One should arrange everything from singing competitions, exhibitions and concerts, to create newspapers, radio programs, debates and election meetings. Some of the grants have been earmarked for measures in connection with the 2013 Universal Suffrage Centennial (Stemmerettsjubileet), which will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Norwegian Parliament's (Stortinget) decision to adopt universal suffrage.
These measures are in addition to the general information work of Local Government and Regional Development and the municipalities are doing to inform voters about the rules, deadlines and practical information about the election.
- This year we got a reduced contribution compared to previous elections but we are very thankful that we got the grant and think we should be able to provide human and machine translations of information and news in at least 80 languages. We have already begun with video interviews of politicians and think that the offer is important and contributes to an increased knowledge and turnout among immigrants, says the chief editor of morsmal.org, On Elpeleg.
- We call on all political parties who have multilingual online information to contact us by e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org so we could add links to the elections-portal, added Elpeleg.
